Family History

Herbert Twells was born in 1891 at Southwell and was the son of Robert a labourer and grinder and Ellen Twells of Kirklington Road, Southwell. His father Robert was born in 1860 at Halam and his mother Ellen Twells was born in 1863 at Southwell, they were married in 1888 at Southwell and went on to have 7 children sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Evelina b1890, Herbert b1892, Emma b1895, Florence b1897, Robert b1901 and Nellie Twells b1909, all were born in Southwell. In the 1911 census the family on Kirklington Road Southwell Nottinghamshire and were shown as Robert 51 yrs a labourer and grinder, he is living with his wife Ellen 48 yrs and their children, Lina 21 yrs a silk winder, Herbert 19 yrs a warehouseman, Emma 16 yrs a lace winder, Florrie 14 yrs a scholar, Robert 10 yrs a scholar and Nellie 2 yrs of age.

Military History

Gunner Herbert Twells enlisted at Southwelll and initialled served with the Army Veterinary Corps with whom he served in Egypt and Salonika he later transferred and served with the 351st Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, he was killed in action on 21st October 1917 and is buried at Ypres Reservoir Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
