Albert Edward Cotton was born on 4th May 1881 at Danesmoor, Clay Cross, Derbyshire he was the son of Samuel a door keeper and Mary Ann Cotton née Morgan, of 53 Langford Street, Sutton in Ashfield, Samuel was born in 1855 at Presnett, Worcestershire, Mary Ann Morgan was born in 1848 at Little Birch Herefordshire, she died in 1911 aged 63 yrs they were married on 15th July 1879 at the Zion Chapel, Church Street, Claycross, they had 5 children, Albert b1881, John b1883, Florence b1885, Elsie b1887 and Edgar born 1894, in the 1911 census the family lived at 53 Langford Street, Sutton in Ashfield. Albert Edward married his wife Ruth Lavinia Gregory born 21st October 1885 on 25th December 1902 at St Marys Church, Sutton in Ashfield, they lived at 22 Nags Head Yard, Sutton in Ashfield, they had the following children, Samuel born 25th January 1903, Florence Edith May born 23rd February 1904, Mary Ellen born 10th January 1908 and Elsie May born 12t April 1911. In the 1911 census the family are living at 42 Carsic Lane, Suton in Ashfield, Albert Edward is 29 yrs and is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Ruth Lavinia 24 yrs and 3 of their children. Commencing 17th January 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 6 pence a week.

Military History

Private Albert Edward Cotton enlisted and served with the 2nd battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, he landed in France on 23rd February 1915 and died of a bullet wound on 17th July 1915 at the 2nd Canadian Stationary Hospital Le Touret and is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery.
