Reginald Harold Cook

Reginald Harold was born in 1892 in Paddington, London, and was the son of Reuben Harold and Louisa Lorey Cook (née Wright). His father Reuben was born in Salisbury Wiltshire, on 17 August 1863, the son of Richard Cook, a builder. His mother Louisa Lorey was born in Islington, London, on 13 February 1869, the daughter of John Wright, a policeman, and his wife Mary Ann. She was baptised at Islington St Mary on 7 March 1869. His parents were married on 17 December 1889 at St Michael, Wood Green, Haringey, London. Reuben (26) was a coal merchant and living on Holloway Road, Haringey. They had nine children whose places of birth indicate that the family moved frequently, including Willsden (Middlesex), Kingston upon Thames (Surrey) and Hampton Wick (Middlesex) with the two youngest being born in Nottingham: Frances Marian b. Holloway London 13 June 1890; Reginal Harold b Paddington 1892; Mabel L b. London 1 August 1893; Gertrude E b. 26 October 1894, Catherine Margery b. 4 May 1896 and Lancelot Kent b. 25 November 1897 all born in Kingston on Thames; Keith Reuben J b. Middx. 26 October 1899 (O/N/D Kingston Surrey); Harold Lorey b. 20 August 1902 and Dorothy Edith Eleanor b. July 1906 both born in Nottingham. In 1891 Reuben (27), who was secretary to an Athletic Club, and Louisa were living in Chelsea, London, with their first child, Frences (9 months). Also in the household was a general domestic servant. By 1901 Reuben was a brickyard manager for a colliery company and living with his wife at 4 Cliff Cottages, Cinderhill Road, Bulwell, Nottingham. In the home on the night of the census were their seven children: Frances (10), Reginald (9), Mabel (7), Gertude (6), Catherine (5), Lancelot (3) and Keith (1). Reuben and Louisa employed one domestic servant. Their youngest son Harold Lorey was born the following year and their youngest daughter Dorothy in 1906. Reuben and Louisa were still living at 4 Cliff Cottages in 1911 and this continued to be the family home until at least 1941. All nine children were still living at home: Frances a milliner (draper's), Reginald a brickwork manager's assistant, Mabel and Gertrude (no occupations given), Catherine a chemist's packer and Lancelot, Keith, Lorey [Harold Lorey] and Dorothy. Reginald married Nellie Ada Allen (b. 29 September 1883) in 1916 (A/M/J Nottingham); they had one son, Dennis Lancelot Harold Cook born 7th March 1917. They lived at 22 Heskey Street, Huntingdon Street, Nottingham. His widow Nellie was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week with effect from 2nd April 1919. In 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled Nellie was living at 322 Radford Road, Nottingham; she was the manageress of a tripe shop. Also in the household was her son Dennis, a salesman collector credit, and Frances A Allen (b. 4 Ferbruary 1861) a widow and retired net folder, together with two other people whose records remain closed. Reginald's parents were still living at Cliff Cottages in 1939. Also in the household were his unmarried sisters Frances a milliner and Mabel and Gertrude whose occupations were given as unpaid domestic duties together with his married sister Dorothy Barnett. Reuben Harold died on 16 March 1941; administration of his will was awarded to his widow. Louisa probably died in 1950 (J/F/M Nottingham). Of Reginald's siblings: His sisters Frances, Mabel and Gertrude remained single. Frances died on 6 June 1962; she was then living at 198 Perry Road, Sherwood. Probate was awarded to Albert Carlin, her sister Catherine's husband. Mabel also died in 1962 (J/F/M Nottingham) and Gertrude died in 1946 (J/A/S Nottingham). Catherine Margery married Albert Carlin (b. 17 November 1896) in 1933 (A/M/J Nottingham. In 1939 they were living in Mansfield where Albert was an assurance district manager. They later returned to Nottingham and were living at 198 Perry Road, Sherwood, at the time of her death on 4 September 1974. Lancelot Kent married Sarah Patricia Alexandra Parks (b. 4 August 1902) in 1923 (J/F/M Nottingham. In 1939 they were living in Bulwell with their son Lancelot Reginald (b. 28 January 1926 d. 26 June 1910); Lancelot snr. was a colliery blacksmith. He died on 30 July 1959; he was then living on Bannerman Road, Bulwell. Keith Reuben J. married Mary E Culley (b. 29 September 1905) in 1931 (J/A/S Nottingham) and in 1939 was living at Stockhill Terrace, Nottingham with his wife; he was a power house attendant. The records of two other members of the household remain closed. Keith died in 1977 (J/A/S Nottingham). Harold Lorey was a manager of a brickworks in 1939 and living in a boarding house in Wrexham, Denbighshire. He died on 3 February 1993; he was then living in Talgarth, Brecon, Powys. Dorothy Edith Eleanor married Arthur F Barnett in 1935 (A/M/J Nottingham). She was recorded living in her parent's home at Bulwell in 1939. Dorothy died on 30 August 1978; her home was in Milford, Surrey.
