He was the son of William and Margaret Cantwell of 2 Lime Street Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire. He was the husband of Martha (née Hutchinson) Cantwell and the father of Margaret, Jessie Matilda, Alice, Olive and Dorothy Cantwell. In 1911 they lived at 6 Nesbitt Street and Martha later moved to 28 Tudor Street (both Sutton in Ashfield).
