Alfred Welton was one of six children born to Alfred and Julia Welton (nee Thomson). He was born in Retford in 1890 and had five siblings, George born 1880, Walter 1883, Ada1885, Annie1887 and Percy born 1898. In the first years of marriage they lived on London Road, Ordsall, Retford, where Alfred senior worked as a drayman. The family moved to 26 Wright Wilson Street, Ordsall and lived there for many years. Alfred (the younger) probably enlisted before he married Millicent Footitt in early 1917, a marriage which lasted less than a year due to the death of Alfred but still produced a daughter, Lillian in 1917. In 1919, Millicent remarried to John W B Starr in Retford.
Alfred enlisted at Retford as number 37138 (see medal card) of the South Staffordshire Regiment but later was transferred to the 26th Battalion Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment). As he has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
