Family History

William Thomas English was the son of Edwin and Charlotte Scott (née English). His father was born in Nottingham in 1861 and his mother in Northamptonshire in about 1854. According to the 1911 Census, Edwin and Charlotte had then been married for 31 years and had had two children, sons William Thomas English b. 1882 (reg. J/F/M Nottingham, surname English, mother's maiden name English) and Samuel George b. 1883 (reg. J/F/M). In 1891 Edwin (29), a chimney sweep on his own account, and Charlotte (36) were living on Hucknall Road with their sons William (11) and Samuel (7). By 1901 the family was recorded at 44 Hucknall Road, Carrington, Nottingham. Edwin, William and Samuel were chimney sweeps. Edwin and Charlotte were still at the same address in 1911 but both sons had left home on marriage. William married Hannah White (b. August 1880) in 1903 (reg. Nottingham) and had two children, Charles Edwin English b.1905 and Kathleen b. 1914. They lived at 8 Hucknall Road, Carrington, Nottingham, where Hannah and her son Edwin (6) were recorded on the 1911 Census while William was a patient, possibly in Nottingham General Hospital. Their daughter Kathleen was born three years later. Following William's death his widow was awarded a pension of 21 shillings a week with effect from 2nd April 1917. Hannah, her son and daughter, were living on Jenner Street, Nottingham, when the 1939 England & Wales Register was compiled. Hannah did not remarry and probably died in 1955. Wiliam's brother Samuel served with Army Cyclists Corps and was killed in action on 24 October 1918. (See 'Extra information')
