He was the son of Edward and Elizabeth Langham. In 1891 they were living at 61a Willoughby Street, Lenton, with their children; William (14), May (9), John (6 b. abt 1885), Arthur (4) and Amy (1). By 1901 they were at 5 Kyte Street Lenton with only May, John, Arthur and Amy registered at home. When John enlisted in 1915 he gave his next of kin as his mother Elizabeth Marshall Langham of 5 Cyril Cottages Kyte Street Lenton.
Army service record survives. He attested on 26 May 1915, age 29. Buried Foncquevillers Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France (grave ref I.D.9).
The following items were returned to Langham's family after his death:' disc, letters handkerchief, testaments, silk handkerchief, silk post cards, medal, boy's badge, picture post card, photos, note book, eyeglasses in cases, false teeth broken in two places'. Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged) 7 June 1916: Langham killed in action May 25th 1916, Private John Langham, Sherwood Foresters, son of Elizabeth and the late C Langham of 5(sic) Cyril Cottages.
