Family History

John Severn was born in 1899 at Bulwell and was the son of the late Johnathan a lace curtain maker and Emma Severn née Gamble of 245 Vernon Road, Old Basford, Nottingham. His father Johnathan was born in 1872 at Basford, he died in 1905 aged 35 yrs, his mother Emma Gamble was born in 1872 also at Basford, they went on to marry in 1893 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they had the following children, Alfred b1893, John b1899 and William b1905 all were born in Bulwell. In the 1911 census the family are living at 532 Vernon Road, Old Basford and are shown as Emma 39 yrs a widow, head of the family she is living with her children Alfred 18 yrs a waggon builders labourer, John 12 yrs a scholar and William 6 yrs of age, also living with them are John Gamble 58 yrs a general labourer, Emma's father and William Gable 20 yrs a carriage builder Emma's brother and Mable Gamble 24 yrs a hosiery hand Emma's sister

Military History

Private John Severn enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Old Basford, he served with the 2/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 26th September 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial
