Family History

Frederick Walter Straw was born in 1898 at Farnsfield and was the son of Walter an earthenware manufacturer and Annie Elizabeth Straw née Larder of Farnsfield. His father Walter was born in 1863 at Farnsfield and his mother was born in 1864 at Louth, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1891 at Louth and had a further two children, Mabel Annie b1893 and Olga Mary Straw b1895 both born at Farnsfield.In the 1911 census the family are living at Farnsfield and are shown as Walter 48 yrs an earthenware manufacturer, he is living with his wife Annie Elizabeth 47 yrs and their children, Mabel Annie 18 yrs no occupation listed, Olga Mary 16 yrs a scholar and Frederick Walter 12 yrs a scholar, also living at the address are two domestic servants, Edith Crooks 17 yrs and Edith Fable 16 yrs.

Military History

Second Lieutenant Frederick Walter Straw served with the Officer Training Corps at Nottingham, he was commission as Second Lieutenant on 2nd July 1915 (gazetted 1st July 1915 ) and joined the 3rd battalion York and Lancaster Regiment. He was later attached to the 14th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment. He was wounded in action on the Somme on 3rd November 1916 and died on 7th November 1916. His name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France Pier and Face 14 A and 14 B
