Family History

Matthew Henry Knowles was born in 1883 he was the son of the late James a coal miner hewer and Fanny Knowles née Dexter and the brother of Cyril and Mountney Knowles. James was born in 1856 at Walton, Derbyshire, Fanny Dexter was born in 1852 at Codnor, they were married on 8th August 1876 at ST Thomas Church, Brampton, Derbyshire, they had 5 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived on Sherwood Street Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire. Fanny 57 yrs is a widow she is living with her three sons, Matthew Henry married Kate Chambers (born 12th December 1894 ) in 1914 at Mansfield, they lived at 238 Mansfield Road, Sutton in Ashfield, they had a son Mountney born 7th May 1915. Commencing 9th April 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military History

Private Matthew Henry Knowles was enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Sutton in Ashfield, he was Killed in action, 3rd September 1916, during the attack near Beaumont Hamel, France during the Battle of the Somme. Buried: Knightsbridge Cemetery, Mesnil-Martinsart, France. Row F. Grave 23.
