Lester Staples Holloway was born in Moor Crichel, Dorset in 1891. He was the only child of Harry and Annie Holloway, née Fowler. The three lived together at Moor Crichel until Lester moved away to work as an estate carpenter, as shown in 1911, as a boarder in Martinstown, Dorchester. Although no records are to hand after 1911, he must have moved to the Welbeck estate for his employment.
On the 1st Sept 1914 Lester Staples Holloway was attested at Worksop age 23. He spent the next 303 days training in the UK. Lester and his Battalion joined the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force and went to Gallipoli on the 1st July 1915. Whether Lester took part in the Suvla Bay landings is not recorded but shortly after, he was in the 19th General hospital, Alexandria Egypt where he died of enteric on 30 August 1915. He is buried in Alexandria(Chatby) Military Cemetery H.144
