He was the son of Jesse and Eliza Hind of Edwalton Nottingham (CWGC). Jesse and Eliza had seven children: Edward, (1865-1873), Jesse William (b. 1866), Edith May (b. 1870), Oliver Watts (b. 1873), Ethel Maud (b. 1875), Lawrence Arthur (b. 1877) and Harold Ashover (b. 1879). He was the husband of Eliza Montgomery ('Nina') nee Andrews of Ardara Comber Co. Down, whom he married on 26 April 1906, and father of Eileen Pirrie (b. 1908), Edith Ashover (b. 1910) and Doreen. In 1911 they lived at Manor Park Ruddington Nottinghamshire. His cousins, Lieutenant Jesse Francis Montague Hind. 9th Bn Sherwood Foresters, and Trooper Oliver Ashover Hind, Australian Light Horse, were also killed in the war.
Hind joined the Robin Hood Rifles in 1900 was promoted Captain 1903 and Major 1913. He arrived in France 25/2/1915 and was wounded at Hooge 1/8/1915. Following recuperation in England he returned to France 26/10/1915. He became battalion commander 1/5/1916 and was promoted Lieutenant Colonel 18/5/1916. Hind was killed in the fighting around Gommecourt and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
His brother, Oliver Watts Hind, endowed alms houses in Edwalton in memory of Lawrence and also their nephew, Lt JFM Hind. (WMA 11331) The dedication reads: 'These houses were erected in 1927 by Oliver Watts Hind in affectionate remembrance of his father Jesse Hind JP of Edwalton, solicitor clerk of the peace for the country and first clerk to the County Council of Nottinghamshire, born 1842, died 1919, wise counsellor and faithful friend. Also of his mother, Eliza Hind, born 1842, died 1907. Herself forgetting, she thought only of others. Also in affectionate remembrance of his brother, Lawrence Arthur Hind MC, solicitor, lieutenant-colonel 7th (The Robin Hoods) Battalion, the Sherwood Foresters, born 1877, wounded at Hooge in 1915, killed leading his Battalion in the attack on Gommecourt, France, July 1st, 1916. Also of his nephew, Jesse Francis Montague Hind, born 1893, lieutenant, 9th Battalion, the Sherwood Foresters, wounded at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli, in 1915 and killed in action whilst in command of his company at Thiepval, France, September 27th, 1916. In life they all did their duty.'
