Family History

Charles Colgrave was born in 1894 he was the son of George a postman and Harriet Colgrave née Jarvis of Nottingham. George was born in 1856 at Ampthill, Bedfordshire, Harriett Jarvis was also born in 1856 at Bottesford, they were married in 1881 their marriage was recorded in the Leicester registration district, they went on to have 6 children, sadly 1 died in infnacy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 126 Pym Street, Nottingham, George is 55 yrs and a postman, Charles is 17 yrs and a clerk in an engineering works. Charles married Gertrude May Skinner (born 11th July 1892 ) in 1914 at Nottingham, they lived at 17 Mortimer Street, Nottingham. Commencing 24th February 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week. Two brothers also served, Joe in Italy and George in India (see obituary).

Military History

Private Charles Colgrave, 1st Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, enlisted at Nottingham he died of wounds on 12th August 1918. He had previously served with 10th, 12th and 17th Battalions of the Sherwood Foresters. He is buried in Longuenesse (St Omer) Souvenir Cemetery (grave ref V.D.49). Awarded British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Nottingham Post obituary (abridged) 22 August 1918: 'Colgrave died of wounds, August 12th 1918, Private C Colgrave, age 25, Lancashire Fusiliers, husband of Gertrude Mary Colgrave, son of Mr and Mrs G Colgrave. Mother, father, sisters, brothers serving (Joe in Italy and George in India).' In memoriam published 12th August 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “COLGRAVE. – In ever-loving memory of my dear husband, Pte. Charles Colgrave, Lancs. Fusiliers, died of wounds August 12th, 1918 (late tramways). This day brings back sad memory, my loved one gone to rest, and those who think of him to-day are those who loved him best. – Sorrowing wife. “COLGRAVE. – In loving memory of Pte. C. Colgrave, dearly beloved youngest son of Mr. and the late Mrs. G. Colgrave. Thy will be done. – Loving father, sisters, and brothers. “COLGRAVE. – In loving memory of Pte. C. Colgrave, died of wounds August 12th, 1918.
