Family History

John Mottram was born in 1892 at Watnall, he was the son of Abraham a coal miner contractor and Harriett Ann Mottram née Alcock of the Flatt, Kimberley. Abraham was born in 1864 at Kimberley Harriett Ann Alcock was born in 1863 at Eastwood, they were married on 17th December 1887 at Holy Trinity Church, Kimberley, they had 7 children. John married Mary Ann Meakin (born 4th April 1888 at Moorgreen). in 1910 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they lived at 3 Hallsworth Yard, Cotmanhay, Ilkeston, they had 3 children, John William born 12th November 1911, Arthur born 14th December 1912 and Doris born 13th January 1916. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at Flatt, Kimberley , Abraham 47 yrs is a coal miner contractor, he is living with his wife Harriett Ann 48 yrs and their children, Arthur 21 yrs a coal miner loader, Selina 16 yrs a domestic servant, Doris 10 yrs and Lilly 5 yrs of age. In the same 1911 census living at High Street, Kimberley we find John 19 yrs a coal miner loader he is living with his wife Mary Ann 25 yrs Commencing 2nd October 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 6 pence a week.

Military History

Private John Mottram enlisted at Ilkeston, he served with the 1st battalion, Leicestershire Regiment, he landed in France on 5th December 1915, he died of wounds on 24th March 1916 and is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
