He was born in 1893 (J/A/S) the son of George Rawson, born in 1871 at New Whittingham, Derbyshire. His mother was Emily Rawson (nee Gregory), born in 1872 at Nottingham. His parents were married in Nottingham in 1891 (J/F/M) At the time of the 1911 Census George and Emily had been married for 20 years and had had ten children of whom nine were still living. Nine children were named on the census of 1901 and 1911; Harriett, George, Rowland (Roland), Charles (Charley), Chris, Ann, Thomas, Elsie Emily and Ada. One child's name, Catherine, was deleted from the 1911 census and annotated 'dead'. In 1901 George (30), a coal miner/hewer, and Emily (29) were living at 13 Salisbury Terrace, Hawthorne Street, Meadows, with their five children; Harriett (9), George (7), Rowland (5), Charley (3) and Chris (9 months). By 1911 they were living at 24 Briar Street, Meadows; George was working at Clifton Colliery. In the household on the night of the census were seven of their children; Rowland (15), Charles (13, printer), Chris (10), Ann (9), Thomas (7), Elsie (2) and Ada (11 months). The family later moved to Harrington Street, Sussex Street, Nottingham. George married Elizabeth O'Brien in Nottingham in 1912 (registered O/N/D) and they had two daughters. Rose E. was born in 1913 (J/F/M). A second daughter, Connie, was named in the notice of George's death in August 1917 but no trace has been found of a child of this name born between 1914-1917. However, there is a record of the birth of a Mary Rawson, mother's maiden name 'O'Brien', in Nottingham in 1914 (J/A/S). Eiizabeth Rawson married Joseph Weatherall in 1919 (J/A/S); this is confirmed on the Register of Soldiers' Effects which records a payment to George's widow, Elizabeth Weatherall, in November 1919. George's brother PO/199(S) Private Roland Rawson RMLI was killed at Gallipoli on 6 May 1915 (Helles Memorial); his mother was the named next of kin and her address was given on the RN record as 66 Kings Meadow Road, Meadows.
Rawson volunteered for service and following training he was drafted to France on 02/09/1915. He was posted to "B" Battery, 76th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, and was involved in the fighting in the Ypres Salient. He was killed in action on 28/07/1917 but taken to a dressing station. He was buried nearby at Canada Farm Cemetery.
Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 10 August 1917: 'Rawson. Killed in action July 28th, Lance Corporal George Rawson RFA. Wife and two children Rosie and Connie.'
