Family History

Stephen Clarke (junior) was born in 1889 at Greasley and was the son of Stephen (senior) a colliery winding engine driver and Lavinia Clarke née Jordan of 35 Bentinck Street, Hucknall. His father Stephen was born in 1858 at Colston Bassett and his mother Lavinia Jordan was born in 1862 at Nottingham, they were married in 1883 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have the following children, Thomas b1884 Newthorpe , Stephen b1889 Greasley, Ellen b1893 Hucknall, Mary Lavinia b1889 and Marion Hilda b1903. In the 1911 census the family lived at 35 Bentinck Street Hucknall Torkard and are shown as Stephen 53 yrs a colliery winding engine driver he is living with his wife Lavinia 49 yrs and their children Thomas 27 yrs a colliery banksman, Stephen 22 yrs a Co Operative stores assistant, Ellen 18 yrs a milliner, Mary Lavinia 12 yrs a scholar and Marian Hilda 8 yrs a scholar. His probate was proven (with will) on 21st November 1917 at Nottingham and shows him as Stephen Clarke 35 Bentinck Street, Hucknall Private in HM Army died 8th October 1916 in France, his effects of £183 2 shillings and 8 pence were left to Stephen Clarke an engine winder.

Military History

Private Stephen Clarke enlisted at Hucknall on 28th May 1915, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He died 8th October 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
