William Arthur Burgin

William Arthur was the son of Joseph Burgin and his wife Ada Jane. His father was born in Swanwick, Derbyshire, in about 1861 and his mother also in Swanwick (according to the census returns from 1891) in about 1862. They were probably married in 1883 (A/M/J Walsall, Ada Jane Pallett) and at the time of the 1911 Census had been married for 28 years and had had eight children of whom only seven were still living. Their surviving children were: Hannah b. Swanwick 1883 (J/A/S Belper), William Arthur b. Swanwick 1885 (A/M/J Belper), Ada b. Swanwick 1997 (J/A/S Belper), George John b. Swanwick 30 June3 1892, Edith Ann, b. Nottingham 8 October 1894 (O/N/D Basford), Frederick b. Nottingham 24 March 1898 (A/M/J Basford) and Ernest b. Nottingham 5 July 1900 (J/A/S Nottingham). In 1891 Joseph (30), a coal miner, and Ada (28) were living off Park Lane, Basford with their four children Hannah (7), William (5), Ada (3) and George (1). By 1901 the family was living at 95 Whitemoor Road, New Basford. All seven of Joseph and Ada Jane's children were at home on the night of the census: Hannah (17) a tailoress, William Arthur (15) a shopkeeper's assistant, Ada (13), George John (8), Edith Ann (6), Frederick (4) and Ernest (8 months). The family moved home again and in 1911 were living at 100 Egypt Road, New Basford. Joseph (50) was still working as a coal miner. At home with Joseph and Ada (48) on the night of the census were only of their children: Ada (23), George (18) a cane worker, Edith Ann (16) a cigarette packer, Frederick (14) and Ernest (10). The eldest child, Hannah, had married Harry Brown in 1910 (J/F/M Nottingham) and in 1911 they were living at 27 Scotland Place, Nottingham Road, Basford. Harry (32) was a haulage engine driver in a colliery. They had one child, Eric, who was five weeks old. William Arthur had married Florence Roe (b. 24 February 1885) in 1909 (A/M/J Nottingham); they have not yet been traced on the 1911 Census. William's wife, Florence, probably never remarried; at the time of the national register in 1939 the widowed Florence was living in Nottingham with the unmarried Clara Roe (b. 27 October 1882) a hosiery winder, who was probably a relative. William's mother Ada Jane died on 2 September 1916 aged 54 and his father on 4 March 1936 aged 75 years. Of William's siblings: Hannah has not yet been traced after the 1911 Census. Ada died unmarried on 17 May 1926 aged 38 years. At the time of her death she was living at 3 White Road, Old Basford, which was probably the family home. George John Burgin had moved to Leicester by 1912 as there is a record of him attesting in the Territorial Force on 2 February 1912 when he was working for a Leicester company as a cane worker and living on Castle Street, Leicester. He joined the regular army on embodied service on 5 August 1914 on the outbreak of war, serving as a shoeing smith(612056) in the Royal Horse Artillery (19 Bde). He served in Egypt from 11 April 1915 and probably remained in the Middle East until returning to the UK from Tripoli for demobilzation at Clipstone Camp, Nottinghamshire, on 31 March 1920. He had qualified for the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. George was discharged to 3 White Street, Basford, which was probably the family home. He married Florence M Pearson (b. 7 October 1894) in 1923 (J/A/S Nottingham) and at the time of the national register in 1939 they were living at 556 Vernon Road, Basford, Nottingham. George was a fruiterer (dealer) and was living with Florence and their sons Frank G (b. 22 June 1924) a clothing warehouse assistant, and Derek (b. 6 April 1930). George died on 24 January 1978 aged 85; he was still living at 556 Vernon Road. Edith Ann married John Palethorpe (b. 28 June 1894) in 1917 (J/A/S Nottingham). In 1939 when the national register was compiled they were living in Nottingham; John was a window cleaner. Also in their household was the widowed William Scott (b. 12 September 1884) who was also a window cleaner. Edith died in February 1941 aged 47. Her husband John probably died in 1971 (March Chesterfield) aged 76. Frederick married Elizabeth Sayers in 1921 (J/F/M Nottingham). In 1939 they were living in Nottingham. Frederick was a manager/provision dealer. Also living in the home was Elizabeth and their son William Frederick Burgin (b. 10 July 1921) a cinema cigarette machinist. Also in the household was Clarke Maltby (b. 11 October 1912) a provision dealer's shop assistant. Frederick died on 31 January 1948; he was then living at 24 Saxondale Drive, Highbury Vale, Nottingham. Elizabeth survived him. Ernest married Ivy May Wheatley (b. 14 May 1905) in 1928 (A/M/J Nottingham). In 1939 they were living in Nottingham. Ernest was a cane furniture maker while his wife was a hospital ward orderly. Also in the home was their son Alan R. (b. 31 March 1929). Ernest died on 10 December 1964 (December Nottingham). His widow died on 18 May 1975; she was living at 35 Leiston Gardens, Top Valley.
