Family History

George Fred Dawson was born in 1887 in Worksop to Thomas Smith Dawson, a butcher and shopkeeper, and his wife, Jane Dawson, nee Richardson. This family lived at 11 Potter Street, Worksop, premises they occupied for many years, George was the third child, the others being Thomas, Jane, Emily, Edith and Muriel. When the family reached working age, Thomas worked as a Joiner, Jane a milliner, Emily a nursery governess and George became an assistant butcher in his father’s shop.

Military History

George initially joined the Royal fusiliers number 59610 before transferring to the Sherwood Foresters. His soldiers record is not to hand but he went to France and was killed in action, being commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois memorial.
