James Willows was born in 1897 at Farndon, Newark and was the son of George a maltster and Emma Willows, née Mellors of The Ivies, Farndon Field, Newark. His father George was born in 1865 at Foston, Lincolnshire and his mother Emma Mellors was born in 1865 at Flintham, they were married in 1885 at Newark and went on to have the following children, Sarah Ann b1886, Gertrude b1888, Florence b1889, George b1890, Jack b1893, Ernest b1895, James b1897 and Percy b1898 all were born in Farndon, In the 1911 census the family are living at Farndon Fields, Newark and are shown as George 46 yrs a maltster, he is living with his wife Emma 46 yrs and their daughter Sarah Ann 24 yrs a domestic servant, also living with the family are 2 male adult boarders. In the same 1911 census James has left the family home, he is living with Mark Bailey 45 yrs a farmer and his wife at Cross Lane Farm, Boundary Road, Newark he is shown as being 14 yrs of age a farm servant and is one of three farm servants living at the address.
Private James Willows enlisted at Newark and served with the 4th battalion Seaforth Highlanders, he was killed in action on 21st September 1917 and has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
Article published 24th October 1917 in the Newark Advertiser :- Son of George & Emma Willows, The Ivies, Farndon Fields. Educated at Christchurch School before working at Warwick & Richardsons Brewery. Joined Seaforth Highlanders two years ago. Invalided home twice: Appendicitus and trench foot. Last went out to France in May.
