Herbert Higgins was born in 1893 at Leeds, he was baptised at All Hallows Church, Leeds on 31st December 1893 and was the son of George Wiggins and Millicent Wiggins, his mother died in 1897 at Wharfdale she was 33 yrs of age. He lived with his aunt and uncle William and Emma Addis at 3 Railway Terrace London Road, Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at Bridge Cottage, London Road, Newark and are shown as William Addis 55 yrs a jobbing gardener and his wife Emma Addis 52 yrs along with their nephew Herbert Wiggins 17 yrs of age an iron foundry labourer. They stated on the census that they had been married 31 yrs but had had no children.
Private Herbert Wiggins enlisted at Newark and served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters, he was killed in action on 20th November 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France.
Article published on 28th November 1917 in the Newark Advertiser :- Nephew and adopted son of Mrs Emma Adis, 3 Railway Terrace, London Road, Newark. Attended the Charles Street Wesleyan Sunday School and afterwards worked at Messrs. Ransome’s. As a footballer was very well known, being connected with Charles Street and other Newark League teams, as a safe and reliable back. He enlisted in July 1914 and in October 1914 was sent to France, where he has been ever since. Home on leave for the last time, about a month ago. He had been slightly wounded in the wrist and also had rheumatic fever. Killed in action, the sad information received from one of his comrades, also a Newark man.
