Family History

Robert Welch was born in 1894 at Newark and was the son of Robert a boatman and Charlotte Welch née Taylor of 13 Tolney Lane, Newark. His father Robert was born in 1861 at Newark and his mother Charlotte Taylor was born in 1866 also at Newark, they were married on 21st July 1881 at the Newark Registry office and went on to have the following children, Annie b1883, John William b1885, Charlotte b1888, Robert b1894, Lewis b1898, Harry Baden Powell b1900, Tom b1903 and Arthur b1906. In the 1911 census the family are living at 53 Warwick Street, Headon Road, Hull and are shown as Robert 50 yrs a boatman, he is living with his wife Charlotte 45 yrs and their children, Robert 17 yrs a brewery bottler at Bentley Bros, Lewis 13 yrs a scholar, Harry Baden Powell 11 yrs a scholar, Tom 8 yrs a scholar and Arthur 5 yrs.

Military History

Private Robert Welch enlisted on 9th March 1915, he served with the 6th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He went out to the Dardanelles in August 1915 He was killed on 9th September 1916 on the Western Front and is buried in Bouzincourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.

Article published 20th September 1916 in the Newark Advertiser :- Second son of Mr & Mrs Welch, 13 Tolney Lane, Newark. Attended Christchurch School and awarded Mumby prize for swimming. Enlisted March 1915 in Lincolnshires. Went to Dardanelles in August. Served in Egypt, Asia Minor, then France. Has two brothers: Pte. W. Welch (Lincs.) recovering from Shell shock. Pte. Lewis Welch, wounded in two places in arm. Transferred from Lincs. to RGA after arriving in England.
