Family History

Arthur Hazelwood was born in 1895 at Nottingham and was the son Robert a basket maker and Martha Hazlewood née Morton of Private Road King Street Southwell. His father was born in 1862 at Selby and his mother Martha Morton was born in 1863 at Southwell, they were married in 1885 at Southwell and went on to have the following children, Ethel Mary b1892 Southwell Kathleen b1893 Southwell, Arthur b1895 Nottingham and Alice b1899 Nottingham In the 1901 census the family are living at Easthorpe, Southwell and are shown as Martha 38 yrs head of the household, a charwoman , she is living with her children Ethel Mary 9 yrs, Kathleen 8 yrs, Arthur 5 yrs and Alice 2 yrs. (his father Robert is not at the address and by 1919 he is deceased (details from next of kin form submitted by his mother in 1919) although no death can be found on BDM index)

Military History

Private Arthur Hazelwood enlisted on 27th October 1914 at Southwell , he gave his age as 19 yrs and 2 months , his next of kin was his mother Martha Hazelwood, Easthorpe, Southwell, he stated he was a miller working for E Caudwell Miller of Southwell. He was posted to the 8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He embarked from Southampton on 28th June 1915 landing the following day at Rouen. He was killed in action on 14th October 1915 during the attack on the Hohenzollern Redoubt, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
