George William Smith was born in 1894 at Newark and was the son of George a general labourer and Eliza Ann Smith née Fryer of 22, Water Lane, Newark. His father George was born in 1870 at Retford and his mother Eliza Ann Fryer was born in 1874 at Ilkeston, they were married in 1894 at Newark and went on to have the following children, George William b1894, Thomas Francis b1895, Martha b1896, Mary Elizabeth b1898, Mary Alice b1903 and Robert b1909 all were born in Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 7 Rowbotham Row, Newark and are shown as George 41 yrs a general labourer, he is living with is wife Eliza Ann 37 yrs and their children George William 17 yrs a labourer, Thomas Francis 16 yrs a labourer, Martha 15 yrs a general servant, Mary Elizabeth 13 yrs a scholar , Mary Alice 8 yrs a scholar and Robert 2 yrs of age.

Military History

Private George William Smith enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Watford, he served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He died of wounds on 3rd July 1916 and is buried at Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
