Ernest Frederick Smith (junior) was born on 28th September 1896 at Chorlton, Manchester and was baptised on 8th November 1896 at St Pauls Church Brunswick Street, Manchester and was the son of Ernest Frederick Smith (senior) a barman and Mary Ann Smith née Rice . His father Ernest Frederick (senior) was born in 1870 at Chorlton Lancahsire, he died in 1899 at Chorlton aged 29 yrs. they were married on 11th December 1894 at St Saviours Church, Chorlton, Lancashire, they went on to have the following children Catherine Maud b1895, Ernest Frederick b 1896 and Emily Amelia b1898 all were born in Chorlton . In the 1911 census he is living with his aunt Elizabeth Rice and cousin Elsie Rice at 11 Pelham Street, Newark and are shown as Elizabeth Rice 39 yrs married, she is living with her daughter Elsie Rice 20 yrs a dress maker and Ernest Frederick Smith 15 yrs a nephew and is an office boy.
Private Ernest Frederick Smith enlisted on 27th August 1914 at Newark, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters, he was killed in action on 26th August 1916 and is buried at Knightsbridge Cemetery, Somme, France.
Article published 7th October 1916 in the Newark Herald :- Late of 11 Pelham Street, Newark and a nephew of Mr & Mrs Rice, Farndon Ferry, with whom he has lived since he was nine years old as an adopted son. A member of London Street Congregational Sunday School and employed by the Trent Navigation Company, Millgate, since he was 14 years of age. He answered his country’s call on August 27th, 1914. On the morning of August 23rd he was in the officer’s mess kitchen with four others, getting breakfast ready, when the shell came. He and two others were instantly killed.
