Cyril David Slater was born on 17th November 1898 at Newark and was the son of William a rural postman and Mary Ellen Slater, of 10, Lawrence St., Newark. His father William was born in 1865 at Newark and his mother Mary Ellen Slater née Horspool was born in 1868 at Newark. They were married in 1899 at Newark and went on to have a further child William George in 1892 at Newark. In the 1911 census his family are living at apart, his father William is living at Besthorpe village, he is shown as being 46 yrs a rural postman, he is living alone and a note on the census states ' living apart from wife' He and his mother are living at 26 Mill Gate Newark and are shown as Ellen Slater 43 yrs married, living on private means she is living with her son Cyril 12 yrs a scholar.
3rd Officer Cyril David Slater served in the Merchant Marine and joined his ship the SS Waverley (West Hartlepool) on 28th June 1915. His ship was torpedoed and sunk on 20th December 1917 in the Mediterranean Sea and he was killed,. His name is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.
Article published on 16th January 1918 in the Newark Advertiser :- Son of William & Mary Ellen Slater and grandson of the late George Horspool of Millgate. Born in Newark and educated at the Mount School. Had less than two years service when appointed Third Officer. Was complimented upon his bravery by the Liverpool Coroner at an inquest some few months ago. His ship ran into a tug at midnight in the Mersey, cutting it in half. He immediately sprang into the dark waters and made a gallant effort to rescue the crew. When the S.S. Waverley was torpedoed, he got into the starboard lifeboat safely with 22 hands, but owing to the terrific weather the boat was unable to get away clear of the ship and a heavy sea struck her, turning her completely over and he was never seen after that. His mother resides at 40 Dudley Road, Grantham.”
