Family History

Father: William Simpson, born in 1875 at Hough-on-the-Hill, Lincolnshire, worked as a general labourer before becoming a boat man. Mother: Annie Simpson, born in 1868 at Birkwell, Oxfordshire.Brothers: William, born in 1896 at Kimberley, Nottinghamshire and Harold, born in 1900 in Nottingham. Sister: Doris, born in 1903 in Nottingham. The family lived at 13 Bosworth Terrace, Meadows, Nottingham, before moving to 8 Eugene Street, Nottingham and finally 23 Florence Street, Meadows, Nottingham.

Military History

Pte. Simpson attested on 23/08/1916 at Nottingham, but was not mobilised until 01/05/1918 at Derby, when he joined 4th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment at Saltfleet, Lincolnshire for training. On 22/07/1918 he was in trouble for overstaying his draft leave, and was sentenced to fourteen days confined to barracks. He finally arrived in France on 21/08/1918, and the following day he was transferred to 12th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Sadly he survived for only three weeks, being killed in action on 11/09/1918 in fighting in the Ypres Salient. His body was never recovered, but his name was commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial.
