Jesse Tatem Shelbourn was born in 1889 at Hough on the Hill, Lincolnshire he was the son of John a monumental stone mason and Eliza Minta Shelbourn née Fisher of 91a , of Baldertongate, Newark. His father John was born in 1844 in Hough on the Hill and his mother Eliza Minta Fisher was born in 1849 at Normaton on Cliffe, Lincolnshire they were married in 1870 their marriage was recorded in the Grantham Registration district, they went on to have 14 children, sadly one was to die in infancy, their surviving children were, Mary Elizabeth b1873 Kedleston, Derbyshire, George b1874 Kedleston, Edward b1876 Kedlestone, Percy Henry b1877 Kedlestone, Walter b1879 Kedlestone, their further children were all born in Hough on the Hill and were Julia b1880, Alfred Ernest b1882, Harold Austin b1884, Spencer Anthony b1886, Frank b1888, Jesse Tatem b1889, Agnes Emma b1891 and Catherine b1896. In the 1911 census the family are living at 91a Balderton Gate, Newark and are shown as John 67 yrs a monumental stone mason, he is living with his wife Eliza Minta 62 yrs and two of their children, Jesse Tatem 22 yrs a stone mason and Catherine 15 yrs Jesse Tatem married his wife Esther Waddington Oliver at St Andrews parish church, Helpringham Lincolnshire on 2nd October 1916.

Military History

Sapper Jesse Tatem Shelbourn enlisted on 9th December 1915 at Newark on Trent, he gave his age as 26 yrs and 274 days, his address was 91a Balderton Gate, Newark on Trent, his next of kin was his father of the same address, he was a labourer. He was posted to the reserves the following day. His was mobilised for war on 4th May 1916 and posted as a sapper in the The Royal Engineers. He landed in France on 12th November 1916 and was killed in action on 6th August 1918, he is buried in Beacon Cemetery, Sailly- Lourette, Somme, France grave reference I.F.7
