Family History

The Sharpe family, Thomas Maximillian (CWGC: Maxfield) and Betsey Hannah, moved around during their married life between North Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire. They had four children, Augusta, Gorgina, Allan and the youngest, James Arthur Sharpe. James was born in Barnsley in 1895. By 1911 the parents and Augusta were resident in Station Road, Ranskill. At this time, James had left home and on 22nd August 1914 he enlisted with the Prince of Wales's Own West Yorkshire Regiment 9th Battalion.

Military History

James attained the rank of sergeant in a short space of time. Just over a year later, on the 2nd July 1915, he was sent to the Dardanelles and took part in the Gallipoli campaign against stiff Turkish resistance, and a month later was reported missing. His death in action was later stated as the 9th August 1915. He was 21 years old. His name is engraved on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli.
