Aaron Sharp was born in 1895 at Newark and was the son of William Sharp a bricklayers labourer and Elizabeth Sharp née Chafer of 8 Guildhall Street, Newark. His father William was born in 1870 at Newark and his mother Elizabeth Chafer was born in 1872 at Grimsby, they were married in 1892 at Newark and went on to have the following children all of whom were born in Newark, David b1893, Aaron b1895, William b1901, Rose b1906 and Charles b1908. In the 1911 census the family are living at 8 Guildhall Street Newark and are shown as William 41 yrs a brick layers labourer he is living with his wife Elizabeth 39 yrs and their children, David 18 yrs an iron moulder, Aaron 16 yrs an iron moulder, William 10 yrs a scholar, Rose 5 yrs and Charles 3 yrs.
Private Aaron Sharp enlisted at Newark on 9th November 1914, he served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters, he landed in France in February 1917 and was killed in action on 26th September 1917. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
Article published 24th July 1918 in the Newark Advertiser :- “Second son of Mrs Elizabeth Sharp, 8 Guildhall Street, Newark. As a boy attended Christ Church School and afterwards worked as a moulder for Messrs. Simpsons’ Limited. He joined the 2/8th Sherwood Foresters on Nov. 9th, 1914 and went through the Irish Rebellion, proceeding to France in February 1917. Posted missing on Sept. 26th and presumed dead in July 1918.
