Edwin Herbert Scales

Edwin was born in 1896 and was the younger son of corset manufacturer Richard Scales and his wife Susannah Scales née Buckenham of Norfolk House, London Road, Newark. Richard was born in 1865 in Hornsey Middlesex and Susannah in 1864 in Beccles Suffolk, they were married in 1889 in Wangford Suffolk. They moved to the Newark area sometime before the birth of their first child in 1892 as their four children were all born in Newark and were Edith Marion b1892, Edward Lionel b1891, Edwin Herbert b1896 and Elizabeth Cynthia b1901, they did have a further child but it sadly died in infancy.In the 1911 census the family are living at 62 London Road, Newark, Richard 46 years and a corset manufacturer is living with his wife Susannah 47 years and their children Edith 19 years an art student, Edward 20 years an assistant in his fathers business, Edwin 15 years and Elizabeth 10 years both students. Richard and Susannah must have been very proud of their two sons who both became officers and served for their King and Country throughout the great war, the tragedy of both of them dying within a month of each other so close to the end of the 'Great War' must have devastated the family and while everyone around them would be celebrating Victory on the 11th November 1918 the news this family received must have been crushing.
