Family History

Arthur was born in Nottingham in 1884 (J/F/M), the son of William Evison Rose and Frances (Fanny) Rose nee Booth. Both William and Frances were born in Ripley, Derbyshire. They were married in 1874 (registration district Belper) and according to the 1911 Census had had 17 children of whom 13 were still living at the time of the census. Ten children were named on the census between 1881 and 1911: William (b. Ripley), Frederick Albert (b. 1874 Codnor), Annie (b. Codnor), John (b. Codnor), Emma Maria (b. 1881, Nottingham), Arthur (b. 1884, Nottingham), Bertie (b. Nottingham), Ernest (b. 1889, Nottingham), Evelyn Frances (Frances Evelyn) (b. 1893, Nottingham) and Horace (b. abt. 1894, Nottingham). In 1881 William (29), a printer lithographer, and Fanny (25) were living at 7 Duke Terrace, Sneinton, Nottingham. Also in the home on the night of the census were their four children William (8), Frederick (6), Annie (5) and John (3) and a boarder, Kate Reaves (26, b. Oakham) and her five-year old daughter Magge (sic). William and Fanny were still living at the same address in 1891 and there were eight children in the home on the night of the census; William (18) a coal miner, Frederick (16) a brass moulder apprentice, Annie (15) an errand girl, John (13), Emma (9), Arthur (7), Bertie (4) and Ernest (1). Also living with the family was William's widowed mother-in-law, Maria Booth (70, b. Wingfield), who was living on her own means. By 1901 William and Frances were living at 4 Rathbone Street, Nottingham. Only six of their children were at home on the night of the census; John (23) a traveller in lace, Emma (20) a box paper maker, Arthur (17) a lace maker, Ernest (11), Evelyn (8) and Horace (7). Also in the household was a boarder, William Woolley (23) a stonemason. Arthur's father William Rose, died on 9 August 1903. The family home was now 52 St Stephen's Road, Sneinton, although some of the older children had already married and left home; Annie had married George William Taylor in 1898; William had married Kate Wormall in 1899 and John had married Elizabeth Ferriman on 22 February 1902 at All Saints Church, Nottingham. Others were to leave home in the coming years - the eldest daughter, Emma, married Thomas Sparks in 1904 and Arthur married Sarah Ann Lawson in 1905 - until by 1911 only the youngest child, Horace, was still living with his mother. At the time of the census Fanny (56) and Horace (14) were living at 6 Bismark Square, Nottingham; Horace was working as a hosiery waste sorter while his mother was on parish relief. Evelyn Rose (17) worked as a milliner and was a boarder at 357 Lenton Boulevard, Lenton, Nottingham. Ernest (22) was a lead glazier (lead lights) and a boarder at 7 Treharris Street, Cardiff. John (33), a tracer, his wife Elizabeth (29) and their two children, Leslie (b. 9 March 1908) and Marjorie (b. 13 September 1910) were living at 24 Kenilworth Terrace, Portland Road, Nottingham. William (38), formerly a coal miner and now a mattress maker, and Kate (32) a lace mender, were living at 3 Mellon Terrace, Raleigh Street, Nottingham, with their only child, Frances Eveline (11). Frederick (36) a labourer (hosiery), and Harriet were living at 7 Pelham Terrace, Kyte Street, New Lenton, with their children Frances Evelyn/Ellen (12) and Annie (10). Annie's husband, George Taylor, a waste merchant, had died on 17 January 1911 (estate £10839 7s 6d). The recently widowed Annie was in the family home at 30 Church Street, New Lenton, and managing the business. She and George had had nine children of whom only seven were still living. Five children were at home on the night of the census; William (10), Doris (6), Alfred (4), Bethe (2) and Constance (4 months). Annie had had another daughter, Muriel, who was their only child at the time of the 1901 Census. Living with Annie and her children at 30 Church Street were her married sister Emma Sparks (30), Emma's husband Thomas (30), both employed as shop assistants, and their only child, Cyril (7). Arthur (27) and his wife Sarah (26, b. Burton on Trent) were living at 64 Peas Hill Rise, Nottingham. According to the information on the census they had one child although the child was not at home on the night of the census. There is a record of the birth of a Mildred Theresa Rose in Nottingham in 1912 (registered A/M/J), mother's maiden name Lawson, and this might be their second child. The CWGC record, which was compiled after the war, has the information, 'father of Miss N Rose of 41 Ashwell Street, Netherfield, Nottingham.' The family's address at the time Probate was awarded to his widow in November 1917 was 42 Bourne Street, Netherfield. Arthur's mother Fanny died in 1913 aged 61. Arthur's older brother John joined the 3rd Bn Sherwood Foresters in 1916. John and his family had moved from Nottingham and were living at the Railway Hotel, Melbourne, Derbyshire, at the time he enlisted. John served with the battalion from 31 July 1916, serving in France from 14 December 1916 to 30 July 1917 and then at home from 31 July. He was discharged from the Army on 29 December 1917 being no longer physically fit for war service (War Badge 300934, British War Medal, Victory Medal). Of Arthur's siblings: No trace has yet been found of Bertie after the 1901 Census or of Annie after the 1911 Census. Ernest may have died in 1937 aged 48 (death registered Nottingham). Frederick's first wife, Harriet, died in 1925 aged 49 and in 1929 he married a widow, Florence Gamble (nee Skelson). Florence's first husband, Walter Gamble, had died in 1927. Frederick died on 23 January 1940 and was survived by Florence; they lived at 9 Kyte Street, Lenton. William died in 1954 aged 78; he and his wife were still living at 3 Mellon Terrace. His wife, Kate, survived him by only a few months dying on 10 September 1954. Probate was awarded to her daughter Frances Eveline Piggot who had married George H Piggott in 1921.
