Family History

Robert Ronald Richardson was born in 1895 at Stanwick, Northamptonshire, he was the son of William a green grocer and the late Annie Richardson née Jackson of 38 Appleton Gate, Newark, Nottinghamshire. His father William was born in 1860 at Bilsby his mother Annie Jackson was born in 1868 at Hale Greet, Lincolnshire she died in 1911 aged 46 yrs in Newark they were married in 1883, their marriage was recorded in the Glanford Brigg district, they had 7 children, sadley two were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 38 Appleton Gate, Newark, William 51 yrs is a greengrocer, he is living with his wife Annie 43 yrs and their children Ronald 16 yrs a green grocers assistant, Ethel 14 yrs, George 11 yrs, May 10 yrs and Dorothy 1 year of age.

Military History

Private Robert Ronald Richardson enlisted on 21st October 1914 at Grantham, whilst residing at Stamford, Lincolnshire, he was 19 yrs and 11 months old, he was a railway porter and lived at 9 Rock Road Stamford, Lincolnshire, his next of kin was his father William of the same address. He was posted to the 6th battalion York and Lancaster regiment, he left to join the Mediteranean Expedition Force on 2nd July 1915, he landed at Gallipoli and whilst fighting on the Peninsula he was shot in the shoulder on 29th August 1915 and died the same day as a result of these wounds, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli.
