Edward John Probert was born in 1896 at Bangor, Carnarvon and was the son of the late John Henry and Harriett Elizabeth Probert, née Orlopp formerly of 44 Victoria Street, Newark. His father John Henry was born in 1857 in Shropshire, he died in 1903 his mother Harriett Elizabeth Orlopp was born in 1863 at Gibralter. His father served in the South Wales Borders regiment, no record can be found of their marriage in England, however as we can see from the birthplace of their children his parents may have been married whilst he was serving abroad. Their children were Adam Henry b1883 Secunerbad, India, Mercy Edith b1884, Poonamallee, India, Gladys Lucas b 1887 Taungoo, Burma, Winifred B b1889 Delhi, India, Edward John b1896 Bangor and Harriett Elizabeth b1897 Bangor.
Private Edward John Probert enlisted at Chatham on 2nd April 1911 and served with the 4th battalion South Wales Borderers. He landed in France on 2nd November 1914, he was returned to England with frozen feet and a toe from his foot was amputated. He was sent to India in February 1917. He died on 22nd August 1917 during an operation for appendicitis at the war hospital in Bombay.. His name is commemorated on the Kirkee 1914-1918 Memorial, India.
Article published 12th September 1917 in the Newark Advertiser :- Youngest son of Nurse Probert, formerly of 44 Victoria Street, Newark, now resident in Hythe. He was in the regular army before the outbreak of war, attached to his late father’s regiment, the South Wales Borderers. Took part in the retreat from Mons when only eighteen-and-a-half years old. Invalided home with frozen feet, for which he had a toe amputated. In Feb. 1917 was sent to East Africa, where he died of appendicitus. Has a brother, Gunner Harry Probert, in the Royal Field Artillery and a sister, Mrs Wentworth, of Rose Cottage, Farndon.
