Joseph Ernest was the eldest of four children born to George and Isabella Wistow. They had married in Sheffield in 1892 and settled in Gamston, Notts where they had their first three children, Joseph in 1895, George in 1896 and Nellie born 1900. By 1901 the family had moved to Ecclesfield in Yorkshire, no doubt to gain employment and here they had their fourth child, Charles born 1903. By 1911 the family, were resident and working on the farm of Mr J W Sparrow’s at Elksley, near Retford where Joseph was a cowman, his father a horseman and his mother, the house keeper. George and Isabella had moved on to Kilton Forest, Worksop by the time Joseph was killed.
Joseph enlisted in Retford and served with A battery , 113 brigade, Royal Field Artillery. His medal index card indicate his first theatre of war was in France which he entered on 27th September 1915. He died of wounds on 19th April 1918 and is buried in the Haringhe (Bandhagem) Military Cemetery in Belgium.
Driver Joseph Ernest Wistow Worksop Guardian 17 May 1918 Driver Joseph Wistow (23), R.F.A., eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Wistow, Kilton Forest, Worksop, died on April 19th, in a Casualty clearing station, in France. Only a fortnight previous the bereaved parents received information that their younger son, Lance Corpl. George Wistow (22), Kings Liverpool Regiment, had been missing since March 28th. They were informed by the Quartermaster that the circumstances made the fact of his being a prisoner quite possible. He was as well as his father, with Mr. G. W. Wood, Kilton Forest Farm Worksop, when he went into the army two years ago. The two brothers were both home on leave last December. Much sympathy is expressed with the parents in their bereavement.
