Sidney Thomas Deeley was born in Carlton (or East Stoke 1901 Census) he was the son of Henry a labourer and Albina Deeley née Townsend of King Street, Southwell His father Henry was born in 1864 at Fringford, Oxfordshire and his mother Albina Townsend was born in Mixbury, Oxfordshire, their marriage was recorded in the Brackely registration district and they went on to have 5 children , Sidney b1892 East Stoke , Ellen b1894 Woodbrough William b1897 Southwell , Edith b1900 Southwell , and Lilian Agnes b1902 Southwell. In the 1911 census the family are living at King Street, Southwell and are shown as Henry 47 yrs a labourer, he is living with his wife Albina 46 yrs and their children , William 14 yrs an errand boy, Edith 11 yrs a scholar and Lilian Agnes 9 yrs a scholar. In the 1911 census Sidney Thomas is shown as being 19 yrs of age a private soldier serving with the 1st battalion Grenadier Guards and is in barracks with his battalion at Brentford, Hounslow. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission record gives his mother as Mrs. A. Deeley, of Wales Court Lodge, Wales, Sheffield.
Private SidneyThomas Deeley enlisted at Nottingham on 21st February 1910 and served with the 1st battalion Grenadier Guards, he went out to France on 12th September 1914 to form the British Expeditionary Force, he was killed in action on 12th November 1914 and is buried in Railway Chateau Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
Article published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 24th November 1914 :- “Private Sidney Thomas Deeley, whose parents reside in Southwell, was seriously wounded in the battle of Ypres, and his parents have now been notified by the War Office that he has since died of his wounds. Deeley was in the Grenadier Guards.
