Fred Bell was born in 1888 at Southwell and was the son of William a bricklayers labourer and Emma Bell née Stevenson of Norwood Fields Southwell Nottinghamshire. His father William Bell was born in 1863 at Southwell, his mother Emma Stevenson was born in 1867 at Farnsfield, they were married in 1887 at Southwell , they went on to have 12 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were all born in Southwell and were , Fred b1888, Albert b1890, Horace b1895, Elsie b1897, Herbert b1900, Walter b1902, Arthur b1906 and Edward b1908. In the 1911 census the family are living at Norwood Fields, Kirklington Road, Southwell and are shwn as William 48 yrs a bricklayers labourer, he is living with his wife Emma 44 yrs and their children, Fred 23 yrs a labourer in a lace factory, Albert 21 yrs a gardeners labourer, Horace 16 yrs a gardeners labourer, Elsie 14 yrs a silk weaver, Herbery 11 yrs a scholar, Walter 9 yrs a scholar, Arthur 5yrs and Edward 3 yrs.
Private Fred Bell attested on 30th August 1916 at Southwell, he gave his age as 29 yrs and his address as Norwood Fields Southwell, and his next of kin was his father James William of the same address. He was posted to the reserves and was mobilised for war on 17th October 1916 reporting to his local barracks at Derby. He was posted on 19th October 1916 to the Royal Scots . He embarked from England 0n 19th July 1917 landing the same day in France and arriving at Etaples Camp on 30th July 1917. On 8th September he was posted to the 5/6th Royal Sots and on 19th October 1917 he was posted to 830th Area Employment Coy. He died on 22nd January 1919 at 10th Canadian Stationary Hospital Calais of influenza whilst awaiting demobilisation. He is buried at Les Baraques Military Cemetery, Sangatte, France.
Three of his brothers also served during the Great War, Horace, 23, in the Foresters, Albert, 28, a Labour Corps and Herbert, 18, the Royal Fusiliers.
