Charles Eustace Morley was born in 1892 at Newark and was the son of Charles Edwin . and Kate Baxter Morley, née Smedley of 94, Bright St., Wolverhampton. His father Charles Edwin was born in 1866 at Newark, his mother Kate Baxter Smedley was born in 1869 at Newark, they were married in 1890 at Newark and went on to have the following children, Charles Eustace b1892, Basil Hugh b1893, Harold Eric b1894 all were born in Newark and Olive Mary b1903 at Balderton. In the 1911 census the family are living at Rose Cottage, Balderton and are shown as Charles Edwin Morley a brewers clerk, he is living with his wife Kate Baxter 42 yrs and their children, Charles Eustace 19 yrs a hairdresser, Basil Hugh 18 yrs a clerk, Harold Eric 17 yrs a brewery clerk and Olive Mary 8 yrs.
Private Charles Eustace Morley enlisted at Darlington in March 1915 and served with the 1st battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action on 9th April 1918 and is buried in Chocques Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
Article published 4th May 1918 in the Newark Herald :- Son of Charles E. & Kate B. Morley, 48 North Road, Wolverhampton. Born in Newark and educated at the Mount School. Attended the Parish Church Sunday School and was a member of the Church Lads Brigade and later the local Territorials. He was apprenticed to the hairdressing with his grandfather, the late Mr R. Smedley, of Middlegate in 1906 and remained until after his death in 1913. Up to the time of his enlistment in March 1915, he was head in the hairdressing salon of Mr E.C. Presland of Darlington. Drafted to France in Aug. 1915 and was wounded in July 1916. Again sent to France in March 1917 and last home on leave in December.
