Family History

Leonard Priestley was born in 1893 in Hawton the son of William and Hannah Priestley née Clark of South Collingham. His father William was born in 1847 in North Collingham and his mother Hannah Clark was born in 1858 also in North Collingham. They were married in 1877 (Newark Registration District) and had five children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood. Their three surviving children were all born in Hawton and were Alice b1881, Herbert b1887 and Leonard b1893. In the 1911 census the family was living at South Collingham and shown as William 64 yrs a farm labourer, his wife Hannah 53 yrs and their children Alice 30yrs a general domestic servant, Herbert 24yrs a horseman on a farm and Leonard 17yrs a doctor's groom .

Military History

Private Herbert Priestley enlisted at Newark and served with the 2/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment). Herbert was killed in action on 26th September 1917. He was buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium (grave ref. XXV. E. 15). His brother Leonard died ten days later on 6 October 1917 of wounds received in action.

CWGC headstone personal inscription: 'Duty nobly done' His brother Lance Corporal Leonard Priestley enlisted at Hucknall in September 1914; he lived in Newark. He served with 'W' Company 15th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment). He died of wounds at Rouen Hospital, France, on 6 October 1917 and was buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, Seint-Maritime, France.
