Joseph Maull was born in 1894 at Newark and was the son of Mark a platelayer and Elizabeth Maull née Payling of 10 Currie Road, Newark. His father Mark was born in 1859 at Newnham, Northamptonshire and his mother Elizabeth Martha Payling was born in 1861 at Newark. They were married in 1881 at Newark and went on to have 6 children, 1 sadly died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children all born in Newark were, Kate b1882, Mabel b1885, Leonard b1891, Joseph b1893 and John William b1900. In the 1911 census the family are living at 10 Currie Road, Newark and are shown as Mark 52 yrs a plate layer for midland railway, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 50 yrs and their children, Leonard 19 yrs an engineers turner, Joseph 17 yrs a parcel porter for Great Northern Railway and John William 10 yrs a scholar.
Rifleman Joseph Maull enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2nd battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps. He was killed in action on 10th July 1917 although this was not confirmed until 20th March 1918. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Nieuport Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
His brother John William enlisted into the Royal Air Force on 12th July 1918 with the service number 267765 he was 17 yrs of age. He survived the war . His brother in law Corporal Arthur Harrison Grocock enlisted on 5th June 1916 at Newark, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France in January 1917 and died of septicaemia at 17th Casualty clearing station on 12th May 1917, aged 30 yrs, he is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium. Plot 12, Row B, Grave 5A. Article published 23rd March 1918 in the Newark Herald :- Second son of Mark & Elizabeth Maull, 10 Currie Road, Newark. A native of Newark and born on the same day on which the King and Queen (Duke and Duchess of York) were married. Attended the Mount School and was afterwards employed by Mr F. Backhouse, butcher, Barnbygate. Later going from there to the Great Northern Railway and was for three years with the parcels delivery van. After which, he was then on the general staff. He enlisted in the KRR in May 1915 and went out to France the following September, being gassed later in the year. Last home in Sept. 1916. Posted missing on July 10th, 1917 and declared dead in March 1918. Eldest brother, Pte. Leonard Maull is in the Mechanical Transport section of the Army Service Corps. Brother-in-law, Pte Arthur Grocock, Sherwood Foresters, died of illness in May 1917 after being in the trenches.
