Family History

Ernest Mabbott was born in 1899 at Woodnook, Lincolnshire and was the son of John a farm labourer and Alice Mabbott née Asher of 17 Lindum Street, Newark. His father John Mabbott was born in 1856 at Hough on the Hill, Lincolnshire and his mother Alice Asher was born in 1856 at Harlaxton, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1875 at Harlaxton and went on to have 12 children, sadly one died in infancy, their children were, Richard b1876 Harlaxton, Mary Jane b1878 Brant Broughton, Thomas b1880 South Stoke, Alice b1881 Woodnook, Lizzie Ann b1884 Woodnook, Henry b1887 Woodnook, Ellen b1888 Woodnook, Rose b1890 Woodnook, Hugh b1891 Woodnook, John Sidney b1893 Woodnook, Ernest b1899 Woodnook and Ronald b1902 Stoke Grange. In the 1911 census the family are living at Wyville, Grantham and are shown as John 55 yrs a farm labourer , he is living with his wife Alice 55 yrs and their children, Hugh 20 yrs a cowman on a farm, John Sidney 18 yrs a footman, Ernest 12 yrs a scholar and Ronald 9 yrs.

Military History

Private Ernest Mabbott enlisted at Newark and served with the 1st battalion, Leicestershire Regiment. He was killed in action on 23rd March 1918 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
