Frederick James Lowe was born in 1885 at Newark and was the son of George a labourer and his first wife the late Lois Lowe née Carlisle of 3 Lindum Grove, Newark. His father George born in 1857 in Nottinghamshire and his mother Lois Carlisle was born in 1857, she died in 1910 age 53yrs. They were married in 1881 in Newark and had the following children, Lois Melinda b1883, Fred James b1885, Arthur b1888, Robert 1890, Edith b1895, Leonard b1897, James b1899, Thomas b1901, Herbert b1903 and Mabel B1910, all were born in Newark. Following the death of his wife Lois George went on to marry again in 1911 to Edith Annie Wilkinson in Newark. Frederick James Lowe married his wife Charlotte Spick in 1906 at Lincoln, they lived 8 Eggleston Yard, Newark. They had three children, Frederick James b1907 , he died in 1913 aged 6 yrs in Newark, Nellie born 11th January 1908 and Robert born 12th July 1914 all were born in the Lincoln Registration District. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 3 Lindum Street, Newark. In the same 1911 census Frederick is living at 8 Eggleston Yard, Newark, he is shown as being 25 yrs an iron moulder, he is living with his wife Charlotte 22 yrs and their children, Fred James 4 yrs and Nellie 3 yrs His widow Charlotte was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence for her and her two children , commencing on 22nd May 1916.
Lance Corporal Frederick James Lowe attested on 10th September 1914 at Newark, giving his age as 29 yrs and 2 months, his occupation as a moulder at Ransomes of Newark and his address as 8 Egglestone Yard, Market Place, Newark, his next of kin was his wife Charlotte of the same address. He stated he had previous service of 3 years with the 4th battalion Notts and Derby's Regiment. He was posted to the 8th battalion Sherwood Foresters and landed in France on 2nd March 1915. He was promoted in the field on 1st September 1915 to Lance Corporal, He died of multiple gun shot wounds on 18th October 1915 at No 1 casualty clearing station and he is buried in the Chocques Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
Article published 10th November 1915 in the Newark Advertiser :- Son of Mr G. Lowe. Resided with wife and two children, aged eight and two, at 2 Eggleston’s Yard. Prior to the war was employed as a moulder at Messrs. Ransome & Co. Ltd. Enlisted in the 8th Sherwood Foresters on Sept. 8th, 1914 and left with his regiment for Luton, undergoing the greater part of his training at Harpenden and Braintree. Struck by shrapnel on Oct. 14th during the fighting at the Hohenzollern redoubt and died four days later.
