Edward Claude Knight was born in 1896 in Ilkeston and was the son of Walter Edward a carter builder and Annie Knight née Smith of 576 Vernon Road, Basford, Nottingham. His father Walter Edward was born in 1857 in Dronfield Woodhouse and his mother Annie Smith was born in 1867 in Whatton, Nottinghamshire, they were married on 10th October 1887 in Ilkeston and went on to have 11 children, Frederick Page b1890 Ilkeston, Minnie b1892 Ilkeston, Lizzie b1884 Ilkeston, Edward Claude b1896 Ilkeston, Ernest b1898 Basford, Benjamin b1900 Basford, John b1902 Basford, George b1907 Basford, Dorothy b1907 Basford and Edith b1910 Basford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 576 Vernon Road,, Old Basford, Nottingham and are shown as Walter Edward 52 yrs a carter/builder, he is living with his wife Annie 44 yrs and their children Frederick Page 21 yrs a carter builder, Minnie 19 yrs a lace worker, Lizzie 17 yrs a cutter outer, Edward Claude 15 yrs a dyers helper, Ernest 13 yrs a dyers helper, Benjamin 11 yrs, John 9 yrs, Horace 7 yrs, George 4 yrs, Dorothy 4 yrs and Edith nine months. Edward Claude married his wife Mabel Lamb (born 3rd September 1895 ) in 1917 in Nottingham they lived at 281 Commercial Road, Bulwell, Nottingham. Following his death his widow Mabel was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 17th June 1918.
Rifleman Claude Knight enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 13th battalion Kings Royal Rifle Corps, landed in France on 31st July 1915 with his battalion and transferred to 12th Battalion before being posted to 1st Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, he was killed in action on 29th November 1917 he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval
Obituaries published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 29th November 1918 :- “KNIGHT. – In ever-loving memory of my dear husband, Rfn. C. Knight, of 281, Commercial-road, Bulwell, killed in action November 29th, 1917. There is a link death cannot sever, tender memories live for ever. – Loving wife Mabel. “KNIGHT. – In affectionate remembrance of my our dear son and brother Rfn. C. Knight, o 141, Bulwell-lane, Old Basford, killed in action Nov. 29th, 1917.
