Family History

Simeon was born in 1895 in Nottingham and was the son of the late Thomas a general labourer and Alice Maud Kent née Potts of 19, Cambridge St., Radford, Notts. His mother Alice Maud Potts was born in 1866 in Louth Lincolnshire and had a son Thomas born in 1890 prior to marrying her first husband Thomas Kent who she married in 1892 in Nottingham. She went on to have the following children with him all born in Nottingham , Fred b1893, Simeon b1895, Maud b1897 , Henry b1900. Her first husband Henry Kent died in 1904 in Nottingham aged 54 yrs. Alice Maud then marries her second husband Harry Holland (b1869 in Whyburton, Leicestershire) in Nottingham in 1906 , Harry brought two children to the marriage Harry b1903 and Alice b1905, they then had their own child Albert born 1910. The family are shown in the 1911 census living at 5 Towles Yard, Ossington Street, Radford and are shown as Harry Holland 42 yrs a general labourer, he is living with his wife Alice Holland 45 yrs and their children , Fred Kent 18 yrs a leather dresser, Simeon Kent 16 yrs a leather dresser, Henry Kent 11 Yyrs a scholar Maud Kent 14 yrs a domestic servant , Harry Holland 8 yrs a scholar, Alice Holland 6 yrs a scholar and Albert Holland 1 yr.

Military History

Private Simeon Kent, enlisted on 25th January 1915 at Nottingham , he gave his address as 19 Cambridge St Radford and his next of kin as his mother Alice Holland of the same address. He served with 1/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles). He embarked from Southampton on 28th June 1915 disembarking the following day at Rouen and joining his battalion in the field. He was admitted to hospital to no 6 General Hospital on 17th September 1915 with influenza. He rejoined his unit on 16th January 1916. On 2nd August 1916 he once again admitted to 19th Casualty Clearing station and eventually transferred to 16th General Hospital Le Treport where he died of nephritis 11th August 1916. He was buried in Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport

His brother also died in the Great War - Private Frederick Kent, 2/7th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles), was killed in action on 28th September 1917. He is commemorated on Tyne Cot Memorial. He was the 21 year-old son of Alice Maud Holland, 19 Cambridge Street. Radford, Nottingham. He was buried in Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport In memoriam published 28th September 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “KENT. – In loving memory of Pte. Simeon Kent, died on active service August 11th, 1916; also Pte. Fred Kent, killed in action September 28th, 1917, husband of Elizabeth Kent.
