Thomas Kay and Annie Goucher married in 1872 registered in Worksop. They lived in nearby Woodsetts and had nine children all born in Woodsetts, William H born 1874, Robert 1879, Harry 1881, Sam 1883, John L 1885, Grace 1887, Frances 1890 Rowland 1894 and Cecil born 1896. Thomas was a lifelong miner, an occupation that his sons followed. One of the sons, Samuel married on 4 April 1904 at Anston Parish Church to Lily Turner and firstly made their home there. The couple had three children born in Anston, George Sidney 5 Feb 1905, Dora 6 August 1910 and Martha Annie in July 1914 It must have been around this time that the family move to Worksop living at 387 Gateford Road.
Sam was attested at Worksop and passed as fit on the 3 Sept 1914 and joined the Leicesters two days later. He would have been one of the first to volunteer. He went to France on 29 July 1915. He has no known grave but is one of the 72,000 servicemen who are commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. His wife received a pension of 23/- for herself and their three small children.
