Robert Huckerby was born in 1897 at Newark and was the son of Charles Huckerby a brewers cellar man and Harriett Huckerby née Croom of 28 Balderton Gate, Newark. His father Charles was born in 1874 at Newark and his mother Harriett Croom was born in 1876 at Southwell they were married in 1894 at Newark and went on to have the following children all born in Newark, Robert b1897, Charles b1898 and Mary b1902. In the 1911 census the family are living at 3 Heppenstall Row, William Street, Newark and are shown as Charles 37 yrs a brewers cellar man, he is living with his 3 children, Robert 14 yrs an iron moulders apprentice. Charles 13 yrs a scholar and Mary 9yrs a scholar. Roberts army service records contains an army form W5080, submitted by his next of kin upon the soldiers death giving details of relatives. This form dated 14th May 1919 was submitted by his father Charles who gave details of Roberts siblings and states on it his mother Harriett has been living apart from her husband for the last 9 yrs and her current address was unknown.
Private Robert Huckerby enlisted on 15th December 1913 at Newark, he gave his age as 17 yrs and 6 months his address was 15 Wright Street, Newark, his next of kin was his father Charles of the same address , his occupation was that of a moulders stamper out'. He served with B' Company 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment . He landed in France on 2nd March 1915 and was killed in action on 30th July 1915 , having no known grave his name is commemorated on Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
His brother, Private Charles Huckerby served with the 2/8th Sherwood Foresters Regiment he survived the war. Article published 7th August 1915 in the Newark Herald :- Son of Charles Huckerby, 15 Wright Street, Newark. As a boy attended the Wesleyan Day School and was a member of the Charles Street Wesleyan Sunday School. Employed at Messrs. J. Simpson & Co. prior to the outbreak of war, when he left Newark with the battalion. Shot through the heart while on sentry duty. His brother, Pte Charles Huckerby is with the 2/8th Sherwood Foresters at Dunstable.
