Francis Cecil Hitchcox was born in 1899 in Lincolnshire and was the son of Caleb George a steam crane driver and Ann Hitchcox née Draycott of 5 Blytons Yard Millgate Newark. His father Caleb George was born in 1876 in Warwickshire and his mother Annie Draycott was born in 1881 in Nottinghamshire, they were married in 1898 in Stamford, Lincolnshire and went on to have 10 children 2 of whom sadly died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were : Frank b1901 Lincs, Albert b1901 Lincs, Ann b1905 Warwickshire, Elsie b1907 Lincs, Agnes b1910 Lincs, Alice b1914 Notts, Nancy b1918 Notts and Jose Hitchcox b1921 Notts. . In the 1911 census the family are living at 14 Cotton Square, Millgate, Newark and are shown as George 35 yrs a steam crane driver, he is living with his wife Ann 30 yrs and their children, Cecil 12 yrs a scholar, Frank 10 yrs a scholar, Albert 10 yrs a scholar, Ann 6yrs, Elsie 4 yrs and Agnes 4 months.
Private Francis Cecil Hitchcox enlisted in Nottingham in May 1915 and initially served with the service number 306274 in the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment, later transferring to the 1st battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers. He died on 7th April 1918 at the 20th General Hospital, France he is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
Article published 24th April 1918 in the Newark Advertiser :- Son of George & Ann Hitchcox, 5 Blytons Yard, Millgate, Newark. A Christ Church boy and after school worked for Messrs. Cafferata & Co., joining-up in May 1915. Admitted to the 20th General Hospital, France on April 1st, suffering from severe gunshot wounds in the abdomen, passing away on the 7th. a.k.a. ""HITCHCOCK"".
