Joseph Henry Harrison was born in 1896 at Newark and was the son of John Henry a house painter and Emily Harrison née Elston of 39 Vernon Street, Newark. His father John Henry was born in 1874 at Cambridge and his mother Emily Ann Elston was born in 1873 at Hockerton, they were married in 1895 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell registration district, they went on to have the following children all of whom were born in Newark, Joseph Henry b1896, Gladys Annie b1897, Charles Wilfred b1902 and Ivy May b1908. In the 1911 census the family are living at 3 Parker Street, Newark and are shown as John Henry 37 yrs a house painter, he is living with his wife Emily Ann 38 yrs and their children Joseph Henry 15 yrs foundry worker in moulding department, Gladys Annie 14 yrs a scholar, Charles Wilfred 9 yrs a scholar and ivy May 3 yrs of age.
Lance Corporal Joseph Henry Harrison enlisted on 15th May 1915 at Newark, he gave his age as 19 yrs and 269 days, his address as 39 Vernon Street, Newark and his occupation as that of an engine cleaner. His next of kin was his father John Henry of the same address. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He embarked from Southampton on 6th March 1916 and served on the Western Front until 21st September 1916 when he was admitted to the 3rd stationary hospital in Boulogne was gastritis. On the 27th September he was returned to England via the Hospital Ship St Denis and taken to Edmonton Military Hospital where he remained until 27th November 1916. Following his discharged he was returned to France and on 12th July 1917 was promoted to Lance Corporal . He died from wounds on 6th August 1917 whilst serving with the 16th battalion Sherwood Foresters and was buried at Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Poperinge, Belgium.
Article published in the Newark Advertiser 22nd September 1917 :- Son of John Henry & Emily Harrison, 39 Vernon Street, Newark. A native of Newark and was at the Wesleyan School, afterwards going to Barnby Road School. Later he entered the employ of the Great Northern Railway and was at the station at the time of his enlistment on May 15th, 1915, when he joined the Sherwood Foresters. He went to France in Feb. 1916 and returned home in Sept. having been slightly wounded and gassed. He was of most exemplerary character, very religious and at one time sang in St. Augustine’s choir and was in Rev. Parkinson’s Sunday Class. He had also been a member of the Church Lads Brigade. Passed away peacefully in his sleep at No. 4 Casualty Clearing Station, after being wounded
