Joseph Edward Hardy was born in 1886 at Newark and was the son of Thomas a labourer at plaster works and Emma Hardy née Mellows of Newark. His father Thomas was born in 1858 at Stanfield, Lincolnshire, and his mother Emma Mellows was born in 1845 at Thoroton, they married in 1880 at Newark. Joseph Edward married his wife Ethel Annie Streets in 1909 at Newark, they went on to have the following children, Charlotte Emma Gwendoline born 1910 Newark, Kathleen born 1911 Newark, Phyllis born 1913 Newark, Thomas Edward born 1915 Newark, and Alfred born 1917 in Newark, they lived at 5 George Street Row George Street Newark. In the 1911 census he and his family are living at 5 George Street, George Row, Newark and were shown as Joseph Edward 25 yrs a labourer in plater and cement works, he is living with his wife Ethel Annie 21 yrs and their children, Charlotte Emma 1 year of age and Kathleen, 6 months old.
Private Joseph Edward Hardy enlisted on 11th November 1914 at Newark, he served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. He served during the Irish rebellion and went to France and was killed in action on 26th September 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
Article published on 4th September 1918 in the Newark Advertiser :- Husband of Mrs E. Hardy, 5 George Street Row, George Street, Newark. Formerly worked for Messrs. Cafferate & Co., joined the Sherwood Foresters on Nov. 11th, 1914 and was in the Irish Rebellion. He had been in France about nine months when reported as wounded and went down to a dressing station. Later reported missing. Leaves a widow and five children.
