Eric Hardy was the son of Samuel Hardy and Ann [Annie] Walker who married at Nottingham in 1887. Their children included: Henry (b.1888), Elsa [Elsie] (b.1890), Annie Walker (b.1892), Samuel (b.1894), Dorothy (b.1896) and Eric (b.1899). The family lived at 41 Wilford Road, Meadows [C.1891]; 18 Lambert Street, Hyson Green [C.1901]. Samuel Hardy, who was a tripe dresser, died in early 1899, even before Eric, their last child was born. So Eric would never have known his father. His mother worked as a cleaner and in 1911 census the family were living at 32 Glentworth Road, Radford. This was also the address that figured in the all the Army paperwork relating to Eric Hardy and was the address stated on the CWGC website. Ann Hardy died in the Basford registration district in 1946, aged 76, having never remarried.
Enlisted at Nottingham on 7 July 1917 and placed in the Army Reserve; initially assigned to the Sherwood Foresters [Service No.95478]; mobilised on 4 October 1917 and posted to the 87th Training Reserve Bn. [Service No.5/110410] and sent to Catterick; embarked for France 1 April 1918; transferred to the 13th Bn. Yorkshire Regiment [Service No.48312]; subsequently posted on 19 April 1918 to the 1st/4th Bn. Yorkshire Regiment; appointed lance corporal on 28 May 1918; compulsory transfer to the 5th Bn. West Riding Regiment [Service No.34418] on 26 July 1918; appointed acting corporal 9 September 1918; killed in action; his body was buried at Hermies Hill British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
In memoriam published 15th September 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HARDY. – In loving memory of my dear son, Eric Hardy, killed in action September 15th, 1918. Sadly missed. – Mother, sisters, and brothers. “HARDY. – In honourable memory of my dear chum Eric, killed in action September 15th, 1918. In life respected, in death lamented. – Leslie. “HARDY. – In loving memory of dear old Eric, killed in action September 15th, 1918. Death divides, memory clings. – Mrs. Mawer and Dorrie. “HARDY. – In loving memory of our brother, Lce.-Cpl.
