Family History

John Footitt was born in 1897 at Newark and was the son of John a plumber and Jane Footitt née Bagshaw of 12 Boundary Road Newark. His father John was born in 1869 at Newark and his mother Jane Bagshaw was born in 1868 at Laxton, they were married in 1892 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration District, they went on to have the following children, William b1894 Laxton, Annie Violet b1896 Laxton, John b1897 Newark, Arthur b1902 Newark, George b1904 Newark and Ernest b1907 Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 12 Boundary Road, Newark and are shown as John William 47 yrs a plumber, he is living with his wife Jane 43 yrs and their children, William 17 yrs an apprentice to a plumber, Annie Violet 15 yrs an assistant dressmaker, John 14 yrs an errand boy Arthur 9 yrs a scholar, George 7 yrs a scholar, Ernest 4 yrs, also living with them is Frederick Bagshaw, he is shown as being 22 yrs a druggist warehouseman, he is a boarder. At the time of his death John was living at Slaughterhouse Lane, Newark.

Military History

Lance Corporal John Footitt enlisted at Newark, he served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 2nd March 1915 and was killed in action on 18th April 1916. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
